Disney has found the perfect Aladdin in Mena Massoud. This young Egyptian raised in Ontario has a smile to crack any princess.
A lot of people are wondering whether it’s really worth the effort to produce live-action adaptations of films that already exist.Personally, and in the case of Disney in particular, I calculate the relevance of these duplicates on a magic scale. If we find the same magic as in the original movie, the rehearsal is worth it. The Jungle Book and Cinderella, for example, have been quite successful in this regard, delivering proposals that match the original works.
Aladdin, on the other hand, did better than that. In the first few minutes, we feel the magic we hoped for, like the original. The musical numbers, which respect the first film while bringing an additional grandiose effect, the story, the colorful realization, the convincing play of the actors, the quality of the special effects, everything in this production makes us capsize.
“You always have to act like you own everything when you don’t have anything.” – Aladdin
Disney has found the perfect Aladdin in Mena Massoud. This young Egyptian raised in Ontario has a smile to crack any princess. He swims in Agrabah like a fish in the water.Actress Naomi Scott plays a spirited, courageous and determined Jasmine who dreams of becoming the new Sultane. While in the original version the princess of the Middle East was looking for true love, this Jasmine wants more than anything to command her kingdom and give a voice to the people. We are more than satisfied with this modern transformation of Princess Jasmine. It must also be said that Will Smith is a rather convincing genius. Funny, endearing and touching, the actor brings an extra humanity to this famous character from the Disney universe, making us almost forget that of the late Robin Williams.
The moviegoers were also eager to discover what the studio had done with Abu, Rajah and Iago. The advancement of technology allows today to create creatures with a few hairs close to the real animals. The tiger of the princess is fabulous, just like the parrot of Jafar, but it is the monkey of Aladdin who charms us the most with its friendly little mush and its funny reactions, similar to those he had in the film of 1992.
The fans of the first hour will also be happy to learn that Disney has very little altered the lyrics of the original songs. There are some slight modifications and a whole new piece that adds to the soundtrack (and that was frankly not necessary), but the cult titles – «A new world», «Prince Ali», «Les nuits d’Arabia» – remained almost intact.
Well, there are a few accelerants in the musical numbers that have irritated our eye and a tacky introduction that has irritated us a little, But the magic we see in Aladdin is so strong that it makes us forget all the little flaws of the film. Adults will return to childhood and children will discover an extraordinary story of love, friendship and courage.
